What is the Lead and Copper Program?
The Lead and Copper Program, initiated January 1992, was developed to minimize public exposure to deleterious health effects of lead and copper in drinking water.
Why might I have elevated levels of lead and copper in my drinking water?
If your home or business was built prior to the state lead ban that took effect September 20, 1988 your home or business may be plumbed with galvanized or copper pipes that may have lead solder.
How likely am I to be affected by Lead and Copper in my drinking water?
Very unlikely.
Why are Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Waterworks (TPCW) customer not likely to develop health effects?
Several Reasons:
- TPCW does not have lead main lines or service lines.
- With the exception of the original distribution mains within the city limits of Houma TPCW did not use lead solder.
- In the older parts of Houma where lead solder was used, material was packed into the joint to prevent the lead from coming in contact with the drinking water.
- The District adds a corrosion inhibitor which helps prevent leaching of metals into the drinking water.
Does TPCW monitor Lead and Copper levels in drinking water?
Yes, from our source water to your tap many samples are collected and analyzed as per the Lead and Copper Rule.
